Lettie B. Cowman (1870–1960)
Lettie B. Cowman was
an American missionary, author, and co-founder of the Oriental Missionary
Society (OMS) . Born Lettie Burd in the United States, she married Charles E. Cowman in 1889. Together, they felt
called to missionary work and, in 1901, moved to Japan to spread the Christian
gospel.
In Japan, Lettie and Charles co-founded the Oriental Missionary Society (now One Mission
Society), focusing on evangelism, church planting , and
training indigenous leaders. They
played a key role in expanding Christian missions throughout East Asia.
After Charles became ill, Lettie returned to the United
States to care for him. Following his death in
1924, she turned her grief into a
ministry of writing and inspiration. Her most famous work, "Streams in the Desert" (1925), is a
devotional book that has become a beloved classic, offering comfort and
encouragement to millions worldwide.
Lettie continued to lead the Oriental Missionary Society and
wrote several other devotional books. She is remembered for her faith, compassion,
and literary legacy, which continues to inspire
Christians around the world.
