Lettie B. Cowman (1870–1960)

"What we do in a state where all obstacles are removed determines our character."

Lettie B. Cowman was an American missionary, author, and co-founder of the Oriental Missionary Society (OMS) . Born Lettie Burd in the United States, she married    Charles E. Cowman in 1889. Together, they felt called to missionary work and, in 1901, moved to Japan to spread the Christian gospel.

In Japan, Lettie and Charles co-founded the    Oriental Missionary Society (now One Mission Society), focusing on evangelism, church planting   , and    training indigenous leaders. They played a key role in expanding Christian missions throughout East Asia.

After Charles became ill, Lettie returned to the United States to care for him. Following his death in    1924, she turned her grief into a ministry of writing and inspiration. Her most famous work,    "Streams in the Desert" (1925), is a devotional book that has become a beloved classic, offering comfort and encouragement to millions worldwide.

Lettie continued to lead the Oriental Missionary Society and wrote several other devotional books. She is remembered for her faith, compassion, and    literary legacy, which continues to inspire Christians around the world.
