MARCH 30
Sarah Edwards (1710–1758)
Sarah Edwards was the wife of Jonathan Edwards, a prominent Puritan theologian and a key figure in the Great Awakening —a major religious revival in colonial America. Born Sarah Pierpont on January 9, 1710 , in New Haven, Connecticut, she was the daughter of James Pierpont , one of the founders of Yale College (now Yale University).
In 1727, at the age of 17, Sarah married Jonathan Edwards, and together they had 11 children. She was known for her intelligence, piety, and grace, and she played a vital role in supporting her husband’s ministry. Their home was a hub of intellectual and spiritual activity, where Sarah managed household affairs and provided hospitality to many visitors.
During the Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s, Sarah
experienced profound spiritual renewal, which her husband described as an
example of Christian devotion. Her faith and gentle
nature became an inspiration to the community and reflected the ideals of Puritan
womanhood.
When Jonathan became president of Princeton University in 1758,
Sarah remained a devoted partner. Tragically, Jonathan died that same year from
a smallpox inoculation, and Sarah passed away later in October 1758 , just
months after his death.
Sarah Edwards is remembered for her faith, family devotion,
and her influence on generations of
theologians, scholars, and even a U.S. Vice President (Aaron Burr Jr.)
her grandson.
