Sarah Edwards (1710–1758)

"My God Lives, and He Has My Heart"

Sarah Edwards was the wife of Jonathan Edwards, a prominent Puritan theologian    and a key figure in the    Great Awakening —a major religious revival in colonial America. Born  Sarah Pierpont  on    January 9, 1710 , in  New Haven, Connecticut, she was the daughter of James Pierpont , one of the founders of  Yale College (now Yale University).

In 1727, at the age of 17, Sarah married Jonathan Edwards, and together they had 11 children. She was known for her intelligence, piety, and    grace, and she played a vital role in supporting her husband’s ministry. Their home was a hub of intellectual and spiritual activity, where Sarah managed household affairs and provided hospitality to many visitors.

During the Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s, Sarah experienced profound spiritual renewal, which her husband described as an example of    Christian devotion. Her faith and gentle nature became an inspiration to the community and reflected the ideals of    Puritan womanhood.

When Jonathan became president of Princeton University in 1758, Sarah remained a devoted partner. Tragically, Jonathan died that same year from a smallpox inoculation, and Sarah passed away later in October 1758 , just months after his death.

Sarah Edwards is remembered for her faith, family devotion, and her influence on generations of        theologians, scholars, and even a U.S. Vice President (Aaron Burr Jr.) her grandson.

Catherine von Bora (1499–1552)

"I will cling to my Lord Christ as a burr on a coat".

Catherine von Bora was a former nun who became the wife of Martin Luther, the leader of the Protestant Reformation. Born in Lippendorf, near Leipzig, Germany, she was sent to a convent at a young age and later took monastic vows. Inspired by Luther’s writings challenging the Catholic Church, Catherine and several other nuns escaped the convent in 1523 with his help.

In 1525, she married Martin Luther, despite societal opposition to clergy marriage. Their union was considered unusual but became a model for Protestant pastors and their families. Catherine managed their household, a former monastery, and was known for her business acumen. She ran a farm, brewed beer, and provided hospitality to Luther’s many visitors.

Catherine and Luther had six children, and she played a significant role in shaping the image of the Protestant pastor’s wife —a model of piety, industry, and family life. After Luther’s death in 1546, Catherine faced financial struggles but remained committed to the Reformation cause.

She died in 1552 at the age of 53, leaving a lasting legacy as a key figure in the social and domestic transformation brought about by the Protestant Reformation.

Issues Women Face and Biblical Solutions

6. Infertility and Social Pressure

Women who struggle with infertility often face stigma and emotional distress. The Bible reassures that God hears the cries of the barren woman (1 Samuel 1:10-20). Hannah was mocked for her infertility, but she trusted in God and was later blessed with Samuel. Society must support women struggling with infertility rather than shame them. Encouraging trust in God’s plan and offering emotional support can help women navigate this difficult journey.

5. Body Shaming and Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Women often face pressure to meet unrealistic beauty standards, leading to self-esteem issues. The Bible teaches that true beauty comes from within, a gentle and quiet spirit that is precious to God (1 Peter 3:3-4). Leah, though less favored than Rachel, was chosen by God to be part of Jesus’ lineage (Genesis 29:31-35). Society must embrace diversity and teach young girls that their value is not in their appearance but in their character. Encouraging self-worth based on God’s love will help women find confidence and joy.

  4. Human Trafficking and Exploitation

Women and girls are often victims of trafficking and exploitation. The Bible teaches that every person has worth, and God hates oppression (Psalm 82:4). Esther risked her life to expose the evil plot against her people and saved them (Esther 7:3-6). Like Esther, Christians must stand against injustice by advocating for victims and supporting anti-trafficking efforts. By providing rehabilitation and economic opportunities, survivors can find new hope and dignity.

   3. Lack of Education

In many parts of the world, girls are denied education, limiting their potential. The Bible emphasizes the importance of wisdom and learning (Proverbs 4:7). Jesus encouraged Mary to learn at His feet, even when others expected her to focus on household tasks (Luke 10:38-42). Providing education for girls will empower them to contribute to society and fulfill God’s purpose for their lives. Churches and organizations can support scholarships and mentorship programs to help girls succeed.

2. Domestic Violence

Many women suffer abuse in their homes, feeling trapped and powerless. The Bible condemns violence and calls for love and respect in relationships (Ephesians 5:25). God desires homes to be places of peace, as seen in how Boaz treated Ruth with kindness and protection (Ruth 2:8-12). The church and society must support victims, providing shelters and counseling to help them rebuild their lives. Encouraging men to follow Christ’s example of love will create healthier families.

Issues Women Face and Biblical Solutions

1. Gender Inequality

Many women experience discrimination in workplaces, education, and leadership roles. The Bible teaches that all people, regardless of gender, are created in God's image (Genesis 1:27). Jesus valued women and gave them a voice, such as when He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:7-26). To promote equality, society must recognize women’s worth and give them opportunities to thrive. The church should encourage women in leadership roles, just as Deborah led Israel as a judge (Judges 4:4-5). By following Christ’s example of inclusivity, we can build a more just world.

Book Review: Twelve Extraordinary Women by John MacArthur

John MacArthur’s Twelve Extraordinary Women is a deeply insightful and inspiring book that explores the lives of key women in the Bible. Through careful biblical analysis and engaging storytelling, MacArthur examines how God used ordinary women in extraordinary ways to fulfill His divine purposes. The book highlights women such as Eve, Sarah, Rahab, Ruth, Mary, and others, revealing their faith, struggles, and contributions to God’s redemptive plan.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is MacArthur’s ability to make these biblical figures relatable and relevant to modern readers. He does not simply recount their stories but provides theological insights into their character and the spiritual lessons they offer. Each chapter dives into the historical and cultural context of these women, helping readers understand the challenges they faced and how their faith shaped their destinies.

MacArthur emphasizes God’s grace and sovereignty in using imperfect individuals for His glory. He highlights the themes of redemption, obedience, and trust in God, making this book both educational and spiritually enriching. The writing is clear and engaging, making it accessible to both new believers and those more familiar with biblical studies.

Some readers may find MacArthur’s complementarian perspective on gender roles to be a strong influence throughout the book, as he upholds traditional views on women’s roles in the family and church. Book Review: God’s Women Then and Now by Deborah Gill and Barbara Cavaness

God’s Women Then and Now by Deborah Gill and Barbara Cavaness is a compelling exploration of the roles of women in Scripture and how they relate to contemporary Christian life. The book provides an in-depth theological study of biblical womanhood, analyzing key female figures in the Bible and their significance in God’s redemptive plan. With a scholarly yet accessible approach, Gill and Cavaness present a well-researched and balanced perspective on women’s roles in ministry, leadership, and daily life.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its commitment to a thorough examination of Scripture. The authors delve into both Old and New Testament passages, offering insights into how women were called and empowered by God in different historical and cultural contexts. By drawing from original biblical languages and historical backgrounds, they clarify misconceptions surrounding gender roles and highlight the value and dignity of women in God’s kingdom.

Gill and Cavaness also address the ongoing debate about women in ministry, making a strong case for their inclusion based on biblical precedent. The book challenges traditional interpretations that limit women’s roles while emphasizing a Spirit-led approach to understanding God’s will for women today. Their arguments are well-supported by theological and historical evidence, making this an essential read for those exploring the topic of women in leadership within the church.

For readers seeking both theological depth and practical application, God’s Women Then and Now provides a balanced and thought-provoking perspective. While some may find its progressive stance challenging, the book ultimately encourages all believers—men and women alike—to embrace God’s calling with faith and confidence.

Book Review: God’s High Calling for Women by John MacArthur

John MacArthur’s God’s High Calling for Women is a concise yet profound exploration of the biblical role of women in the church and society. Grounded in Scripture, MacArthur presents a clear and compelling argument for embracing God’s design for women as outlined in passages like 1Timothy 2, Titus 2 etc. His writing is both direct and pastoral, seeking to provide encouragement and clarity to Christian women who desire to live according to biblical principles.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its unwavering commitment to the authority of Scripture. MacArthur systematically addresses common misconceptions and cultural pressures that challenge traditional biblical roles. He explains that God’s design for women is not about restriction but about fulfilment through obedience to His Word. The book emphasizes virtues such as modesty, submission, and godly character, painting a picture of what a biblically faithful woman looks like in both the church and the home.

However, the book may be challenging for readers who hold more egalitarian views, as MacArthur strongly advocates for complementarianism—the belief that men and women have distinct but equally valuable roles. His interpretation of certain passages may feel rigid to some, especially in a time when gender roles are a highly debated topic within Christian circles. Yet, for those seeking a traditional, scripture-based perspective on women’s roles, this book serves as an insightful and thought-provoking guide.

God’s High Calling for Women is a valuable resource for those who want to better understand the biblical view of womanhood. MacArthur’s theological depth and pastoral wisdom make this book an enriching read, particularly for women who desire to honor God through their roles in the family and the church. While it may not resonate with everyone, it remains a significant contribution to the discussion of biblical femininity and Christian living.

Proverbs 13:16-17 highlights the importance of wisdom and integrity, virtues that define a noble woman. A wise woman carefully considers her actions, making thoughtful choices that bring honor and strength to her family and community. She is a trustworthy messenger, speaking truth and kindness, bringing healing and encouragement to those around her. In contrast, carelessness and dishonesty can lead to harm, breaking trust and causing unnecessary hardship. This passage reminds women to walk in wisdom, integrity, and responsibility, as their character influences and uplifts those in their lives.

 True beauty

1 Peter 3:4 encourages believers to focus on inner beauty, emphasizing a gentle and quiet spirit that is precious in God’s sight. True beauty is not found in outward adornment but in a heart that reflects humility, kindness, and faith. A gentle and quiet spirit does not mean weakness but a strength rooted in trust in God. When we cultivate inner peace and godly character, we shine with a beauty that never fades. This verse reminds us that what matters most is not how we appear to others but how we are transformed by God’s grace.

  Healing and Restoration

Luke 8:48 says, "Then he said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.’" This verse highlights the power of faith in receiving healing and restoration from Jesus. The woman who touched Jesus' garment was not only physically healed but also spiritually affirmed as a beloved child of God. His words remind us that faith brings both healing and peace in our lives. When we trust in Jesus, we can experience His love, grace, and wholeness.

 His divine plan

Deuteronomy 7:6 says, "For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession." This verse reminds us that God sets His people apart for a special purpose. As His chosen ones, we are called to live in holiness and reflect His love and righteousness. Being God’s treasured possession means we are deeply valued and cared for by Him. This truth encourages us to walk in faith, knowing that we belong to Him and are part of His divine plan.

Uniquely designed

Ephesians 2:10 says, *"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."* This verse reminds us that we are uniquely designed by God with a purpose. As His handiwork, we are not saved by our own efforts but by His grace, to live a life that reflects His goodness. The good works we do are not by chance but are part of God’s divine plan for us. By walking in His purpose, we fulfil our calling and bring glory to Him.

Follow & Serve Jesus

Mark 15:41 says, "In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there." This verse highlights the devotion of the women who faithfully followed Jesus and served Him throughout His ministry. Their presence at the crucifixion shows their unwavering love and commitment, even in the darkest moments. It reminds us that true discipleship involves both following and serving Jesus with a heart of devotion. Their example encourages believers to remain faithful to Christ, regardless of circumstances.
